Too many young Cameroonians complete years of schooling without acquiring the competencies needed to compete, create, or contribute meaningfully. Coaching for examinations has replaced genuine learning in many institutions. A student can pass GCE and still not know how to think critically, communicate professionally, or solve a real-world problem.

A young person graduates and discovers that their certificate is not a key — it is a piece of paper in an already crowded market. The formal employment sector cannot absorb the volume of graduates the education system produces annually. Entrepreneurship, which should be the natural alternative, is extremely difficult without access to capital, mentorship, and a supportive ecosystem.

This challenge is underrated in public discourse but lies at the root of many other problems. When young people do not know who they are, what they believe, or what they are here to do, they become vulnerable to peer pressure, substance abuse, manipulation by political actors, early and unplanned relationships, and gang culture. The hunger for belonging and significance is one of the most powerful forces in adolescent psychology — when healthy structures do not channel it, destructive ones will.

Young people are experiencing depression, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation at levels that communities often mislabel as moral failures. Pressure from families, trauma from the socio-political crisis in certain regions, the stress of poverty, and the anxiety of an uncertain future are real, compound burdens. Yet a culture of silence around mental health leaves young people without the tools to process what they are experiencing.

Young Cameroonians are increasingly disconnected from civic life, not because they do not care, but because systems have repeatedly failed to respond to their concerns. That disengagement is dangerous — vacuums in young populations are filled by misinformation, ethnic and regional tensions, and in the worst cases, radicalization.

Most youth development work in Cameroon is concentrated in urban centres. The young person in a village in the Northwest, in a rural community in the Adamawa, or along the coast in the South region is largely invisible in the programming of most organisations. The challenges they face are often more acute, with far fewer resources available to address them.
