YECAM Impact - Intentional School Summit 2025

Our Story

Youth Excellence Cameroon (YECAM) was founded in 2015 by a group of passionate young Cameroonians who recognized the urgent need to address the challenges facing youth in our communities.

What started as a small community initiative in Yaoundé has grown into one of Cameroon's leading youth empowerment organizations. Over the years, we have expanded our reach to over 25 communities across the country, impacting the lives of more than 5,000 young people.

Our founders believed that every young person deserves access to quality education, skills training, and opportunities for personal growth. This belief continues to drive everything we do at YECAM.

The Problems We're Solving

Six critical issues driving our work — and the approach behind each one

01

The Education Quality Crisis

Cameroon's exam-driven system produces graduates who lack critical thinking, professional communication, and real-world problem-solving skills — leaving young people unprepared for life beyond the classroom.

02

Unemployment & the Skills Gap

A diploma no longer opens doors. Cameroon's formal sector cannot absorb its annual stream of graduates, and entrepreneurship remains inaccessible without capital, mentorship, or ecosystem support.

03

Identity Crisis & Absence of Purpose

A young person without a clear sense of identity is deeply vulnerable — to peer pressure, substance abuse, gang culture, and manipulation. Purpose is not a soft ideal; it is a protective shield.

04

Mental Health & Emotional Wellness

Cameroon's youth carry enormous psychological weight — family pressure, conflict-related trauma, poverty, and deep uncertainty — in a culture that often tells them to simply push through without support.

05

Civic Disengagement & the Leadership Crisis

Young Cameroonians are not apathetic — they are disillusioned. That disengagement creates dangerous vacuums filled by misinformation, ethnic tension, and in the worst cases, radicalization.

The Rural-Urban Divide

Most youth development in Cameroon happens in cities. Young people in rural Northwest, Adamawa, and coastal communities are largely invisible in national programming — yet face the greatest need.

YECAM Core Values

The principles that define who we are and how we serve

01

Service

We exist to serve, not to be served. Every outreach, program, and partnership is driven by a selfless commitment to the growth and wellbeing of young Cameroonians.

02

Humility

We approach every young person, institution, and community with an open heart and a listening ear recognizing that true transformation begins with genuine connection, not superiority.

03

Compassion

We see beyond the behavior to the person. We engage every young person with empathy, patience, and unconditional care because we believe every life is worth investing in.

04

Excellence

We hold ourselves and the youth we serve to the highest standards of productivity and impact.

Integrity

We do what we say, and we say what we mean in every school, institution, and community we enter.
